People love the jasmine vine plant because of its strong, sweet scent and abundance of blooms. The vine gets covered with so many blooms that you can't even see the foliage. Also called star jasmine, you've probably seen it flowering like crazy around your neighbourhood and are wondering how to grow it so that you too can enjoy that delightful aroma.
Another fact that makes the jasmine vine so popular is that it is easy to find, grows fast and is easy to care for. For landscaping, it is very versatile. It can be seen on walls, trellis, arbours, and chain link fences, as well as growing up into trees. Here are some tips on how to grow jasmine vine so that you can start enjoying its virtues.
Size
The jasmine vine is not a small scale plant. In fact, it can grow up to 8 metres. So, if you are looking for an accent in your garden, this plant is not for you as it will need room to grow. Star jasmine grows fast, dense and will attach to anything close by, so don't plant it next to a tree because it will crawl up and into it.
Best Light Conditions
Star jasmine needs a minimum of 4-5 hours of sun daily. While it can grow in the shade, it will look leggy and won't flower, meaning it will have no appeal. Part sunspot will do as long it is nice and bright. On the coast, it can take full sun. If inland, it will need protection from the hot sun or it will burn.
How Often to Water
This will depend on your climate, soil conditions and humidity. As a rule of thumb, star jasmine needs to be watered regularly. Once established well it can go drier but will look much better if deeply watered every 2 weeks. During the colder months, water the plant once you see the soil is drying out.
Soil
Jasmine wine isn't too fussy about its soil condition. Just make sure the soil is loose and well drained. It is a good idea to plant your jasmine with a good dose of compost. If planting in a container, use a good quality, organic potting soil.
Fertilizing
Applying a good dose of organic compost once a year is all you need to keep your plant happy. If you are the kind of gardener who loves to fertilize, then do so during spring with an even balanced fertilizer to encourage flowering and growth.
Pruning
Because the jasmine is a vigorous grower, you will have to do some pruning to keep it from taking over. This means you will have to prune it regularly thru out the year. Keep in mind that those masses of pretty blooms won't last forever and once they die, they can make the jasmine look pretty sad. this is why a good pruning after the flower die is recommended. This will keep the plant looking neater.
